Invenia Group is partnered with a leading international pharmaceutical company, which is seeking a specialist in mRNA vaccine development to head up this newly created department as Group Leader.

Role responsibilities:

The role is pivotal in establishing process development labs for mRNA therapeutics and responsibilities include leading activities such as mRNA candidate sequence selection, mRNA synthesis, and purification, proof-of-concept studies, in-process assay support, process scale-up, and engineering, equipment inventory, and technology transfer to manufacturing. This position also requires working with a team of developmental scientists, liaising with cross-functional teams, and collaborating with industrial and academic institutions to establish a pipeline of mRNA technologies enabling future therapies. Other role responsibilities will include:

  • Implement R&D grade mRNA synthesis and proof-of-concept capabilities
  • Contribute to the development of new principles, concepts, and methods to enable mRNA process development
  • Work independently and guide the team on DNA sequence designing, cloning, and plasmid work, in vitro transcription, and process optimization
  • Contribute to scale-up of processes to pilot scale and technology transfer to manufacturing scale
  • Represent the department in cross-functional and strategic teams engaged in novel therapeutic/vaccine development; actively interacts with internal and external counterparts
  • Provide mentorship, technical oversight, and strategic guidance to the process development team; potentially manages a small team of scientists.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and recommendations to management and other stakeholders.
  • Handle multiple priorities and balance work to achieve business goals; support/lead strategic initiatives.
  • Assist management in budget preparation and recruitment.
  • In addition to the core responsibilities outlined above, the candidate will be expected to comply with required training and maintain focused attention on laboratory safety.

What we are looking for:

We are looking for someone with a Ph.D. or Master’s degree in a related field (or equivalent experience) plus several years’ experience in a commercial laboratory. You must also possess the following skills:

  • Strong scientific understanding of mRNA production and experience with practical hands-on process development experience
  • Hands-on molecular biology skills in plasmid construct design, cloning, DNA isolation and analysis of DNA and protein sequences, PCR techniques, and gene expression
  • Excellent scientific understanding of in vitro transcription, capping reaction, mRNA purification, and formulation (Lipid Nanoparticles) strategies
  • Must demonstrate leadership in training other lab members and leading mRNA development projects cross-functionally
  • Must have the ability to identify and define process improvement procedures
  • Organised, self-starter, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively; adept at working in a fast-paced matrix environment with shifting priorities
  • Understanding of therapeutic antibody/protein quality attributes
